About
Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a privately-owned conservancy spanning 2,000 hectares on the western end of Kangaroo Island, bordered by protected wilderness and the Great Southern Ocean. Since 1997, it has worked to conserve native flora and fauna, with over 190 native plant species recorded. The sanctuary is a gateway to iconic wilderness areas and connects to the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail.
It is known for its abundant native wildlife, where recent visitors have encountered koalas, kangaroos, Tammar wallabies, possums, echidnas, and the Rosenberg's goanna. The sanctuary was severely impacted by bushfires in January 2020, which destroyed most buildings and much of the habitat. In response, it partnered with Cleland Wildlife Park to send 28 koalas as an insurance colony, though over 40 healthy, wild koalas remain.
Visitors can only access the sanctuary by pre-booked guided tour. It also offers two beachfront cabins for accommodation, available via direct booking.
