About
Twisted Gum Wines is a cracker of a spot up in Ballandean, part of the Granite Belt, where they're whipping up some really nice drops. It's a family-run vineyard that really punches above its weight, especially with their Verdelho, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. They do things properly here, focusing on sustainable practices and regenerative viticulture, which you can taste in every glass. Their cellar door, a classic 1920s Queenslander with verandahs all around, is pretty inviting. You can grab a tasting paddle and enjoy the views of the vineyards and hills. They're open weekends from 10 am to 4 pm, and you can even book a tasting outside those hours if you give 'em a call. You'll find crisp white wines, a popular Pink Moscato, and those deep, inky-purple reds they're known for. It's all made from fruit grown right there on their single vineyard, about three hectares hand-tended up on a ridge near Ballandean. They're at 900m altitude, hand-prune and harvest, and use minimal irrigation. For a proper farm-gate experience where you can meet the growers and learn about the winemaking process, it's well worth the trip. If you fancy staying a bit longer, their holiday cottage is a great option for a quiet getaway during the week.
