About
Sporadical City Mushrooms was founded by Julia Laidlaw in 2018 in inner-city Naarm (Melbourne). The farm now operates from repurposed shipping containers on the banks of Darebin Creek at Alphington, practicing small-scale, modular urban farming. It cultivates chemical-free seasonal fungi, offering fresh medleys of oyster mushrooms year-round along with Shiitake and Lion’s Mane varieties.
The business works with local chefs and sells directly to the public at farmers' markets every weekend. It has a 'towards zero waste' philosophy, eliminating food waste by incorporating excess produce into plant-based mushroom products like its vegan sauces and confit. Sporadical City Mushrooms also offers fungi cultivation workshops and 'Fungus Amongst Us' walking workshops with Fungi4Land to share knowledge and connect the community to local ecology. The farm provides a low-food-mile, farm-to-fork option for the Naarm area and aims to build food security through year-round cultivation.
