About
Lakey Farm, located in VIC, employs regenerative farming methods to convert CO2 into soil carbon. Their practices include crash grazing with high stocking rates, rotational mixed grazing, respecting native pasture, cover cropping, native tree revegetation, and establishing wildlife corridors. The farm also utilises dung beetles to move and store livestock dung into the soil. Lakey Farm raises livestock, grazes the pasture, and farms the soil.
Livestock are moved through paddocks in timed rotations, allowing native grasses and forbs to flower and set seed. The farm practices mixed grazing, where cattle, sheep, and goats graze different plants to prevent overgrazing. Lakey Farm initially raised Boer goats and is transitioning to a Boer Saanen goat cross. They also raise Ryeland sheep, a British meat sheep breed, and are transitioning their mixed cattle herd from pure Salers to a Jersey Salers cross. The farm produces both wine and meat from the same land, with vineyard soils serving a dual purpose for vines and native grasses.
Lakey Farm offers lamb, beef, mutton, goat, tallow soap, and various wines at farmers' markets. They also operate a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program with hubs in Alphington, Sunbury, and Coburg. Farm visits are available by appointment. The farm provides an online shop and offers farm gate sales.
