About
Ah Gee Farm is run by local organic market farmers Jamie and Annie Ah Gee. They are the only growers to produce wasabi in tropical North Queensland, cultivating a variety not seen anywhere else outside of Japan. Their wasabi rhizomes sell for $300 to $400 per kilogram, with leaves also sold for $1 each. The rhizomes have a short shelf life, deteriorating within six hours after harvest.
Jamie and Annie began growing wasabi 7-8 years ago, starting while living near Kuranda. Two years prior to September 2022, they purchased a 3.25-hectare property with rich red soil, a permanent creek, and rainforest outside of Malanda. They use regenerative farming practices, focusing on exclusion methods and biological controls, and do not use approved organic chemicals on their food crops. Through deep mulching techniques, they have reduced their water usage by 90 percent.
They also grow herbs, leafy greens, and edible flowers, selling them within a 50km radius. Their business is demand-driven, and they plan to expand with their market. A former head chef stated they supply some of the best fresh produce in the world.
